What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a condition
characterized by increase in blood pressure reading. Diabetes, obesity and high
blood cholesterol level are all predisposing factors to the development of high
blood pressure.

High blood pressure is medically termed
as hypertension. Blood pressure is the
force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart
pumps blood. If this pressure rise and stays high overtime, it damages the body
in many ways.
 World
Health Organization (WHO) defined hypertension as two successive blood pressure
reading 140 for systolic and 90 for diastolic pressure (140/90mmHg). The normal
blood pressure reading for adult is measured in terms of millimeter mercury
(mmHg).
High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious
condition that can lead to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke,
kidney failure and other health problems.
About 1 in 3 adult in the United States
has high blood pressure, it is called the “silent killer” because it usually
has no signs or symptoms, and it only appears after the disease has caused
several damages to vital organs of the body.
Half the adult population is prehypertensive
or hypertensive, and because blood pressure increases with age, most people
will become hypertensive if they live long enough.
