Located in the heart of beautiful Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium
is recognized as one of Canada’s foremost centres for aquatic
education, research and conservation. The Aquarium is in the process
of restructuring to more effectively leverage educational assets and
bring together teaching opportunities from across the organization to
better engage students of all ages and increase the Aquarium’s
standing as a leader in the field of informal education. The

on Initiative represents a significant
opportunity to support students, teachers, parents and adult learners
in British Columbia and beyond, by increasing the scope, scale and
diversity of the Aquarium’s learning initiatives and expanding its
reach. An exciting new leadership position, Director of Education, has
been created by the Aquarium to lead the Aquatic Education Initiative.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Conservation and Education, the
Director of Education will provide strategic direction and leadership
for the Vancouver Aquarium’s education programs and will play a
pivotal role in guiding the Aquatic Education initiative. The Director
will lead the development of new programs, with a focus on e-learning
and increasing meaningful student contact, supported by the
development of assessment tools to measure impact. The Director will
develop and manage strategic relationships with the Provincial
Ministry of Education, school boards and other education stakeholders
and will be responsible for the overall education program planning,
budget and associated fundraising initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be a leader who is a strategic thinker and
builder, with exceptional management skills developed through a
minimum of seven years of management/leadership experience in an
informal education setting (i.e.; science museum, zoo, aquarium, park
or natural history museum). A team builder by nature, the ideal
candidate will have experience identifying opportunities, developing
programs and raising the funding required to implement them. He or she
will also have a demonstrated ability to represent and advocate for
education, students and the Aquarium’s work, with education
stakeholders. He or she will be an educational entrepreneur who has
significant experience in the development of e-learning platforms. A
Bachelor’s degree in science, education, conservation or related field
is required; a Bachelor of Education degree is preferred.
