Background
The United
Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women),
grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United
Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls;
the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men
as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action
and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its
efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to
ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate
into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent
leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building
effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

supporting women’s economic security and rights.

The
Programme Specialist reports to the UN Women Country Representative who
provides the strategic leadership, guidance and oversight of programs and operations,
formulation and execution of UN Women Country Office strategic programs and
plans of actions in line with UN Women and UN development efforts in the
country. Under the overall guidance of the UN Women Country Representative, the
Programme Specialist is responsible for the implementation of the UN Women
Strategic Plan and coordination of related projects in the area of women’s
economic empowerment.

interagency and governmental working groups. She/he will further be responsible
for general programme administration, coordination and consolidating progress

functions. She/he will also ensure the supervision of project officers to
ensure progress toward the stated results and actively participate in knowledge
management activities documenting the lessons learned and supporting resource
mobilization. She/he will work closely with the UN Women thematic advisors at

compliance with development goals and results-based performance

results; - Provide technical support and leadership to
ensure that procurement and selection processes are carried out in
compliance with UN rules and regulations; - Ensure liaison with the Implementation Unit
within the Ministry of Gender and Development to implement results-based

initiatives being implemented as well as with relevant initiatives being

events and preparing reports/results of participation and following up on
actions and commitments taken.

the Country Representative on matters related to resources mobilization,
donor relations, fundraising activities as per CO resource mobilization

corporate partnerships /resource mobilization related issues so that
corporate partnership strategies in the area of women’s economic
empowerment respond appropriately to the field’s demands and needs.

- At least five years of experience required in
the management of development programmes targeting women’s economic
empowerment; - Proven experience in the elaboration and
facilitation of training and other capacity building initiatives for
national partners; - Experience in developing strategies for
community led development programmes is highly desirable; - Significant knowledge and experience with
programming, monitoring and evaluation; - Knowledge of and experience with community
based models for women’s economic security highly desirable; - Experience in joint programming development
and implementation in post conflict/ fragile countries highly desirable; - Experience in West Africa is desirable.
Languages:
- Written and oral proficiency in English is
required; - Knowledge of another UN language would be an
asset.
