Types of epilepsy

Epilepsy
can be classified into five major types based on the type of seizures
experience by the patient. These types are idiopathic, cryptogenic,
symptomatic, generalized and focal or partial epilepsy.

  • Idiopathic epilepsy: No apparent cause can be found.
  • Cryptogenic epilepsy: No damage to the brain has been identified
but other factors suggest the brain has been damaged.
  • Symptomatic epilepsy: Symptoms are due to identified brain damage
    or disruption of brain function.
  • Generalised epilepsy: The seizures involve the whole brain at once.
  • Focal or partial epilepsy: The electrical storm starts from one area of
    the brain.
