Tunisia’s president, Beji Caid Essebsi dies in hospital

Tunisian media report that the 92-year-old president of the country has passed away after being hospitalized in past weeks for the third time.

Radio station Mosaique and state broadcaster Wataniya revealed that for unknown health problems, Beji Caid Essebsi was hospitalized on Wednesday night. The office of Essebsi did not make an announcement or answer comments requests.

He “is in intensive care at the military hospital and things are not going well,” Hafedh Caid Essebsi told AFP earlier.

Essebsi is the first democratically elected president in Tunisia to win office in 2014 following the Arab Spring rebellion in the country. He lately announced that he would not run in November’s planned election, stating the nation should be led by a younger person.

He was admitted to hospital twice in June. His office uploaded a video of the president’s meeting with the defense minister on Monday, visibly weakening Essebsi, raising worries about his fitness for office.
