U.S. President Donald Trump said that after July 4, deportation of undocumented migrants will start.
“We will be removing large numbers of people… starting sometime after July 4,” Mr Trump said, having earlier noted that the deportations would begin “unless we do something pretty miraculous.”
Another report said the U.S. Immigration officials had previously announced plans to launch a sweeping attempt to deport undocumented families lately arrived.
According to a press report, the operation is anticipated to target up to 2,000 families in as many as 10 U.S. towns facing deportation instructions, including Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.
A spokesman for the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) refused to comment, saying: “Due to law-enforcement sensitivities and the safety and security of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, the agency will not offer specific details related to enforcement operations before the conclusion of those actions.”
ICE’s Acting Director, Mark Morgan, said the agency would target deportation families receiving a removal order from a U.S. immigration court.
Mr Morgan said ICE wished to deport undocumented relatives who had lately arrived in the United States to deter the arrival of more Central Americans.
Mr Trump had tweeted that ICE would start removing “the millions” of undocumented immigrants in the US before the official kick-off of his 2020 re-election campaign.
House spokesman Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the country, answered, “The president’s new threat of a mass deportation dragnet is an act of utter malice and bigotry, designed solely to inject fear in our communities.”
