The

The role will be physically based at the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention
Research Group, Sydney School of Public Health, in Camperdown, Sydney. This
group engages with the Melanoma Institute Australia and other local, national
and international groups to promote cancer epidemiology and cancer services research
and their translation into cancer control policy and clinical practice.

We are currently seeking a Biostatistician to
provide statistical analysis support for the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention
Research Group, Sydney School of Public Health. The role involves statistical
analysis of epidemiological, genetic, clinical and molecular data from a range
of different studies, but predominantly analysis of gene-environment
interactions and risk prediction modelling using population-based and
family-based case-control data from an international melanoma research
consortium (GenoMEL). The role includes contributing to research publications,
presentations and grant applications.

As the Biostatistician you will:



  • undertake
    statistical analysis of epidemiological and genetic data from case-control
    population-based studies and family-based studies from the international
    Genetics of Melanoma (GenoMEL) Consortium, including the population-based
    Australian Melanoma Family Study. Genetic data includes genome-wide data
    as well as high penetrance mutations
  • provide
    data management in accordance with best practice, including data checking
    and quality control, harmonisation of data from different sources,
    development of analytical protocols, management of electronic files and
    records, archiving
  • ensure
    confidentiality of databases and other related information
  • contribute
    to research publications and presentations, including peer-reviewed
    journal articles
  • provide
    biostatistical advice and training in statistical analysis, and advice on
    the feasibility of data extraction and analysis for proposed projects, to
    other research staff and postgraduate research students
  • participate
    in the groups’ academic and operational meetings
  • undertake
    statistical analysis and provide statistical advice for other cancer
    research projects and grant applications
  • undertake
    continuing professional development activities in biostatistics and
    melanoma research. 

You will require:



  • completion
    or nearing completion of postgraduate degree in statistics or
    biostatistics or statistical genetics; or postgraduate degree in public
    health/epidemiology with successful completion of advanced units of study
    in statistics/biostatistics; or equivalent
  • strong demonstrated
    skills in statistical analysis of complex epidemiological, clinical and/or
    genetic, data including multiple regression and logistic regression
    techniques, survival analysis, risk prediction modelling; and ability to
    use SAS or STATA statistical software
  • demonstrable
    experience in processing complex data sets
  • an
    understanding of key issues and experience in development of policy and
    procedures in relation to data management, statistical analyses and
    quality control
  • excellent
    computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to format documents
    and draw plots, charts and graphs using software
  • expertise
    in working through problems systematically and cooperatively with
    colleagues and implementing agreed solutions
  • excellent
    written and verbal communication skills.
