The Three Watches Every Man Should Own — Do You Have Them Yet?

Watches are to men what handbags are to women: something you can never truly have enough of. Fortunately, a watch is neither an unattainable dream nor a love you can only admire from afar. As long as you have more money, there is no reason you cannot enjoy more than one.

But once you let desire run completely free, no number of watches will ever feel like enough. This leads to a question many people ask: How many watches should a man own in his lifetime?

There is a famous answer to this question, and I believe most watch enthusiasts have heard it before.

“Every man should own three watches: a casual watch for everyday wear, a sports watch, and an elegant watch suitable for formal occasions. If you have enough budget, multiply each category by three, and that should be enough for a lifetime.”

Many people agree with this idea. Of course, some may argue that watches are not a necessity for men. But is that really true?

I deliberately use the word “man*”, rather than “boy”. Boys can dress more boldly, wear more exaggerated styles, and show off their youth and energy. But once a boy becomes a man, carries responsibilities, and is expected to meet certain standards, he naturally becomes more particular about how he presents himself.

More than a century after the wristwatch became popular, it still represents one of the clearest symbols of a modern, stylish, and tasteful man.

Men rarely wear accessories purely for decoration. Most items usually serve a practical purpose: lighters, hats, belts, glasses, and so on. Yet a watch is often the accessory that says the most about a man’s financial standing and personal taste. Wearing a good watch can reflect both economic strength and an appreciation for quality, which is why people often say that a watch is a man’s second business card.

The point of saying all this is simple: a watch may not seem like a necessity, but in reality, most men will eventually own at least one for one reason or another.

So, back to the idea of “three watches every man should own.” They are:

1. A casual watch

2. A sports watch

3. A dress watch

On superclones.io, there are also very high quality replicas watches in casual, sports and dress styles.

Casual Watch

Let us start with the casual watch.

A casual watch is, as the name suggests, a watch for everyday wear. You can think of it as a versatile, go-anywhere watch. This does not necessarily mean that it matches every outfit perfectly, but rather that it can be worn in almost any ordinary situation.

These are occasions where the dress code is not too strict and people are not judging every detail of what you wear, such as weekend gatherings, casual business meetings, dinners with friends, or everyday social occasions.

So, what should you look for in a casual watch?

There is no official or precise definition of a casual watch, so there are no strict rules. However, I do have a few suggestions.

First, a casual watch should not be too thin. Ultra-thin watches are often less suitable for rough everyday use, while a daily watch will inevitably experience small knocks, scratches, and accidental impacts over time.

Second, I would not recommend choosing a solid precious-metal watch as your everyday piece. Precious metals are generally less durable than stainless steel and similar materials, and daily wear will gradually leave marks and scratches. A steel watch is easier to wear without worrying too much about damage. For those who still enjoy the look of gold, a two-tone watch can be a good compromise.

Finally, your casual watch should be something you genuinely find timeless and attractive. This is likely to be the watch you wear most often and keep with you for the longest time. The more timeless it looks, the less likely you are to become tired of it.

Sports Watch

Fitness and sports have become increasingly popular in recent years, and sporty clothing has naturally become more fashionable as well. Watches are no exception.

Sports watches have become more popular year after year. More and more watch brands are developing their own sports models, such as the Glashütte Original SeaQ and the A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus.

A sports watch, by definition, is a watch that can be worn during physical activities. We usually think of it as a watch that is shock-resistant, durable, or equipped with functions designed for specific sports. Chronographs, dive watches, and tachymeter watches are all common examples.

A true sports watch needs to be robust. Its movement components should be strong enough to withstand greater stress, while the case must usually be thicker and more solid for protection. As a result, sports watches are often larger, heavier, and more substantial on the wrist.

Broadly speaking, however, we also use the term “sports watch” for watches that simply have a sporty appearance.

Many people wear sports watches because they enjoy the style. Sports watches often look more dynamic, fashionable, youthful, and energetic. Others wear them because they genuinely enjoy fitness, swimming, hiking, or outdoor activities.

However, for very intense exercise, I would not recommend wearing a mechanical watch. Inside a small watch case are hundreds of delicate components, and strong impacts or repeated vibrations can easily damage precision parts inside the movement.

For serious sports, a quartz sports watch may be a better choice. Brands such as Casio, Suunto, and Garmin offer professional sports watches with useful functions, durable construction, and relatively accessible prices. For serious fitness enthusiasts and outdoor athletes, they are often the better option.

Dress Watch

In a broad sense, any watch worn with formal clothing can be considered a dress watch. But in the narrower and more traditional sense, a true dress watch usually has several characteristics:

* A precious-metal case

* A fine leather strap

* A simple two-hand, three-hand, or small-seconds layout

* A clean and uncluttered dial

* Possibly a date window, though not necessarily

* A slim case that can easily fit beneath a shirt cuff

* A round, rectangular, or tonneau-shaped case

Of course, the definition of a dress watch is not completely rigid. A Piaget ultra-thin two-hand watch is certainly a dress watch, but a stainless-steel Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin can also serve perfectly well as one.

Everyone may have a slightly different understanding of what a dress watch should be, but I believe the mainstream view is generally similar.

Choosing a dress watch requires particular care. It should suit your personal style, but it should also respect the finer details of business and formal etiquette.

Most dress watches are paired with black or brown alligator leather straps. A high-quality leather strap naturally gives the watch a more elegant, refined, and mature character. If you really prefer a steel bracelet on a dress watch, a finely woven Milanese-style bracelet is usually the best choice, as it looks more classic and sophisticated.

Unlike a sports watch, a dress watch makes a man appear more elegant, restrained, and gentlemanly. Some people prefer the energy and practicality of sports watches, while others are more drawn to the quiet elegance of dress watches.

Personally, my favorite is the Audemars Piguet 15400 replica, which is a classic dress watch.

In today’s world, it is no longer unusual to wear a sports or casual watch with formal clothing, or to pair a dress watch with casual outfits. Even so, I still agree with the idea that every man should own three watches.
