The Stop Community Food Centre began over 30 years ago as one of North
America’s first food banks, and has grown into a vibrant community
centre, using food as a g

ateway to addressing many issues, including
poverty, the environment, social isolation and health. The Stop runs
urban agriculture programs at several sites in the Davenport West and
Wychwood Heights neighbourhoods of Toronto, which include vegetable
gardens, a greenhouse, and naturalized gardens.

We are looking for an individual to join our team to co-ordinate
Earlscourt Park Community Garden and gardening activities at the 1884
Davenport Rd location, as well as one program at Hillcrest Park
Garden. This person will be responsible for maintaining the gardens,
involving members of the community (volunteers, program participants,
vulnerable adults, seniors, and youths) and delivering programming.

Reports to: Green Barn Manager

Supervises: Community Garden Assistant, paid summer students

Duties:

Coordinating Garden Programs
• Undertake yearly planning of the gardens including planting
schedule, seed ordering, crop rotation, maintenance schedule etc
• Ensure that all garden-related duties are performed and gardens are
well-equipped and maintained
• Work closely with the volunteer department on recruitment and
support of garden volunteers across the season
• Facilitate involvement of other Stop programs as well as outside
groups and organizations in Earlscourt Park Community Garden
• Lead, and/or support other garden staff to lead multiple weekly
volunteer gardening sessions at Earlscourt, and one weekly session at
Hillcrest garden with the Sagatay men’s program from the Native Men’s
Residence
• Work with Stop staff to incorporate garden produce into The Stop’s programs
• Work with greenhouse staff at the Stop’s Green Barn to produce seedlings
• Maintain and foster relationships with project partners
(NaMeRes/Sagatay, Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre, Toronto Parks
and Recreation, etc)
• Conduct evaluations and maintain program records
• Work with seasonal staff to coordinate special events and projects
for gardeners and the broader community (including open houses and
field trips)
• Work with other UA staff to coordinate annual gardening workshop series
• Connect garden volunteers to external events, educational
opportunities and community resources by providing info and making
referrals, and support seasonal staff to do the same

General
• Participate in necessary meetings
• Ensure Community Garden programs reflect The Stop’s policies and
procedures (e.g. Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Harassment, Health and
Safety….)
• Supervise and participate in hiring and training of Community Garden staff
• Recruit, train and supervise placement students
• Contribute to writing program reports and funding proposals
• Maintain expense records and other administrative records as required
• Support occasional organization-wide events, such as our annual Good
Food For All Festival

Qualifications:
• Significant experience overseeing community gardens and using
organic garden methods
• Experience coordinating, supervising and supporting diverse volunteers
• Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
• Facilitation experience
• Supervision experience
• Ability to work well with a team and independently
• Demonstrated ability to work with youth and adults from diverse and
marginalized communities
• Conflict resolution skills
• Ability to speak a language relevant to the neighbourhood is an
asset (e.g. Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, Vietnamese,
Tagalog, or other)
• Food Handler certificate and First Aid training required – paid
training available
• A valid Ontario driver’s license is required
• Some evenings and weekends required

*The successful candidate will be required to undergo a police check
and Voluntary Sector Screening.

Salary: $23.55/hour Hours: 37.5 hours/week Start date: March 16, 2015
