The Small Things is
a small but rapidly growing international nonprofit based outside of Arusha,
Tanzania, working with orphaned and vulnerable children and families. We are
entering our second year of on-the-ground operations in Tanzania, and looking
for someone to take on the expansion of our No More Orphans initiative, aimed
at reducing
maternal mortality. They will also be tasked with working closely
with our local Outreach Director, and assisting with communication tasks.
Applicants will need to be comfortable working in a dynamic, fairly independent
and self-motivated work environment, and dealing with the challenges of working
in the developing world. Must love kids!
The Outreach
Assistant/No More Orphans Project Director will be responsible for running the
No More Orphans project (aimed at reducing maternal mortality), as well as for
assisting with writing and communication tasks for the outreach team and
working with any outreach volunteers. They will spend most of their time
working in the maternal mortality area, with any remaining time assisting the
Outreach Director in any necessary areas. This position will require a public
health or medical background. This is a one year contract position, with a
salary of $500 per month plus housing, insurance, $500 flight allowance and
$500 continuing education allowance.
- No
More Orphans - Work
with hospital representative to ensure stocks of Misoprostol and other
materials remain adequate, and oversee purchases as necessary. - Hold
quarterly meetings with traditional birth attendants with assistance of
Palliative Care Team. - Record
and report all incoming data on births from NMO. - Continue
to seek external funding and partnerships to expand NMO. - Continue
to seek opportunities to expand maternal mortality prevention program. - Family
Support Outreach - Assist
with evaluation of applications for children or families to join the
program. - Assist
with developmental assessments of outreach children - Assist
sponsorship coordinator with outreach sponsorship updates and
solicitation. - Prepare
weekly and monthly outreach reports
Required
- A
bachelor’s or master’s degree in Public Health or a similarly relevant
area - At
least one year of relevant work experience - Perfect
written and spoken English - Excellent
written communication skills - Demonstrated
interest in maternal mortality and orphan issues - Experience
living and working in the developing world.
Preferred
- 2-3
years of field experience - Some
Swahili - Familiarity
with East African culture
