In this full-time, experience-rich career path summer position, the Horticulture
Assistant (HA) performs a variety of daily garden tasks in the public gardens
at Riverwood. The HA provides daily support to the Garden and Volunteer
programs, and when needed, the Stewardship P

rogram. The HA schedules,
supervises and leads secondary school students in gardening activities to
fulfill their 40-hour community service requirements.

Position responsibilities

The HA will be responsible to:
• install annual planting beds and apply best management practices to maintain
(water, weed, fertilize, dead-head) public gardens
• maintain the Chappell House ornamental and vegetable gardens
• maintain greenhouse;
• assist the Enabling Garden Coordinator to maintain the Enabling Garden;
• support volunteer gardeners;
• assist the City Head Gardener to maintain the MacEwan Terrace Garden;
• support the Stewardship Assistant, and when needed, plant native trees and
perennials
• support the Volunteer Program to organize, schedule, track hours, supervise
and lead secondary students; and work with community groups and volunteers of
different ages and abilities to garden;
• supports the public education program Discovery@Riverwood and special events;

Skills and qualifications
• Enrolled full-time in a college or university, with emphasis in horticulture,
landscape design, greenhouse technician, nursery or garden centre operations,
science, botany or related discipline, and must plan to return to full-time
studies the next academic year;
• Hands-on gardening experience and ability to identify garden plants is an
asset, basic landscaping is an asset;
• Sense of humour and excellent communication, organizational and multi-tasking
skills; demonstrated leadership skills;
• Ability to work safely as a team and independently with minimal supervision;
• Ability to lead by example and work with volunteers of diverse backgrounds;
• Appreciation of the environment, gardening and out-of-doors work;
• A valid Police check, or the ability to acquire one;
• Basic computer skills are an asset and attention to details when tracking
volunteer hours;
• Training in emergency first aid and CPR is an asset, or training will be
provided;
• A valid class “G” driver’s license is an asset;

The wage is $12.50 per hour; work-week is Tuesday to Saturday. Interested
