WHO WE ARE:
The Primitive Integrated Naturalist Education (P.I.N.E.) Project is a
registered charity created to bring the wonders of the natural world
back to the urban jungle. P.I.N.E.’s mission is to inspire healthy,
lifelong connections between people and nature through outdoor-based
learning and play.
A paid position working under the supervision of the p.i.n.e. camp
directors. All instructors will be expected to work five day camp
weeks, with weekends off.
Please note: each week of camp has a Thursday evening campfire that
staff will be expected to attend and participate in, from 6:45 –
8:15pm.
QUALIFICATIONS
Below please find a list of qualifications, assets and recommended
courses valued in the p.i.n.e. hiring process. P.I.N.E. is committed
to creating resilient, diverse and vibrant communities. To this end we
recognize that we need people from diverse professional, cultural and
educational backgrounds. As such, applicants who do not have some
aspects of the stated skill set, that feel they would still make a
positive contribution to the camp community are encouraged to apply,
and address these differences in the cover letter.
Mandatory Qualifications:
• Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check
• Up to date Wilderness or regular First Aid certification, depending
on where you end up working
• Minimum 3 years experience working with children in a mentorship role
• Naturalist knowledge of local ecosystems
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of wild edible and medicinal plants
• Participated in wilderness skills intensive program, or have
equivalent knowledge from time spent outdoors
• Have been educated in a naturalist based program: Formal education
or otherwise
• Background in theatre, music, or the creative arts
• Participated in/ volunteered at traditional skills gatherings (i.e.
Headwaters)
• Experienced in wildlife tracking
• Graduate of the Ontario Art of Mentoring program.
Assets
• Musically inclined
• Feel comfortable singing and facilitating songs in front of groups
• Experience in permaculture/ growing food
• Experience in land restoration and stewardship
Duties:
• Facilitate fun, educational experiences with campers in nature
• Co-lead groups of up to 10 campers with fellow staff
• Participate and assist to facilitate staff training week
• Assist in program planning and development
• Lead morning and afternoon prep and debrief meetings with all staff
• Mentor CIT staff in skill building
• Assist in developing camp culture by leading and participating in
skits, songs and games
