The
Kitchen Garden is currently looking for a full-time enthusiastic, motivated,
hard-working field worker to join our team for the 2016 growing season. The
position is seasonal, starting immediately

and ends at the end of October.

Who
we are.
The
Kitchen Garden is a 2 acre organic vegetable farm located in Wilton, ON run by
Evan Quigley and Megan Hamilton. The farm is situated on 10 acres with
wonderful biodiversity, deep sandy soils and beautiful views of the Wilton
valley just 25 minutes from downtown Kingston. 2016 marks our 8th
season in operation. We grow over 40 different vegetable crops which are direct
marketed through our stall at The Kingston Public Market, our CSA and several
local restaurants. Our mission is to grow the best tasting, highest quality,
nutrient dense organic produce as efficiently and productively as possible.
No
one ever said farming is easy.
You will wake up early and you will be
tired, sore, dirty, wet, hot, sun burnt, frozen and feasted on by bugs. But at
the end of the day farming is one of the most satisfying and rewarding jobs
there is.
Work
at The Kitchen Garden is diverse, ranging from greenhouse production, field
crop planting, weeding and harvesting, to building and repairing farm
infrastructure. Employees are often called upon to do different and sometimes
tedious jobs in all kinds of weather. Be prepared for hard physical labour.
We
use a tractor for bed preparation, mowing and heavy lifting but most of the
work – from hoeing, to seeding, transplanting and harvesting is done by hand.
Common tasks include:
  • Planting
    – hand transplanting, seeding with Jang, Earthway and Four-Row Pinpoint
    seeders, hand seeding in the greenhouse
  • Fertility
    – spreading compost, soil amendments, and foliar spraying
  • Irrigation
    – set-up and removal or drip tape and overhead sprinklers, hand watering
    greenhouse
  • Crop
    Protection – set-up, removal and venting of row covers, low tunnels, and
    high tunnels
  • Cultivating
    – wheel hoes, scuffle hoes, hand weeding, mulching, trellising, pruning
  • Harvesting
    – all harvesting is done by hand
  • Wash
    & Pack – washing, bunching, quality control, packing
Schedule.
Work
starts at 7:30amand we aim to finish between 3:00-4:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Lunchesare unpaid and are45 minutes in length. We try to keep reasonable hours,
however in farming there are many events out of our control so days might end
earlier or later depending on the weather and the need to finish large tasks.

  • Above
    all applicants must bring a positive attitude to the farm. Are you an
    enthusiastic, motivated person who loves to laugh and have fun? Fantastic!
  • Efficient
    production is key to the success of the farm. Employees are expected to
    work quickly and efficiently both independently and as a team. You should
    be the type of person who is always looking for a better way to get a job
    done and strives to always do their best.
  • Attention
    to detail and the ability to follow oral instructions is critical. We have
    very high quality standards at The Kitchen Garden and you must be able to
    help us maintain this high level of quality while working at a fast pace.
  • The
    crew will be spending a lot of long hard days together so it is essential
    that you can work well as a team.Good communication skills are essential.
  • You
    must be kind, respectful and empathetic to others. We are queer friendly

  • The
    work is physically demanding. Strength, flexibility and endurance are
    important. You must be able to lift heavy bins multiple times every day
    and be prepared to work in challenging postures. Are you prepared to pick
    peas or hand weed carrots all day long?
  • You
    must be punctual and prepared to work in all weather conditions.
    Preparedness is key.Long sleeves, pants, rain gear, a sun hat and a spare
    change of warm cloths are essential.
  • Previous
    experience in organic farming or other manual outdoor work is a major plus
    but not required.
  • We
    care deeply about local organic food. You should too! An understandingof
    local organic food systems is encouraged.
  • Ability
    to commit to the full season is a requirement. We cannot hire people who
    need to leave or cut back on hours in August or September due to school or
    other commitments.
  • A
    driver’s license with transportation to the farm is a must.
Accommodation.
We
have a sleeping cabin onsite with a shared kitchen, washroom and living room
available for a modest rental fee.
Compensation.
Wage
starts $11.25 / hour, plus vacation pay.
