GGGI
has a diverse portfolio of programs in developing countries around the world.
These in-country programs, together with global products and services, focus on
delivering results through an integrated approach of evidence-based green
growth planning and implementation aligned to countries’ development
priorities. The organization also focuses on knowledge development and
management activities which build a strong theoretical and empirical basis for
green growth, while providing concrete options and guidance for policymakers;
as well as building the conditions for public and private green infrastructure
investments.

Since
2012, GGGI has been collaborating with Government of Rwanda (GoR) through the
partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) and other national
institutions towards delivering on identified national priorities in the
EDPRSII, especially supporting Priority 4 (Transform the economic geography of
Rwanda by facilitating and managing urbanization for increased growth
countrywide) and Priority 5 (Pursue a ‘green economy’ approach to economic
transformation).

The
Government of Rwanda (GoR) has actively and consistently pursued national
sustainable economic growth and development. The GoR recognizes the importance
of environmentally sustainable, climate resilient and low carbon development at
the highest policy level. This is reflected in the priorities of Economic
Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy II (EDPRS II), the Cabinet approval
of the Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy (GGCRS) in 2011 and the
consideration of environment and climate change as a cross cutting issue to be
mainstreamed across socio-economic sectors.

Towards
this end, the fund for environment and climate change, FONERWA was established
to serve as the sustainable financing facility to ensure successful
implementation of Rwanda’s green growth actions. As a result, the GoR has
established and is operationalizing the fund – FONERWA with growing
contributions from development partnerships.
