Breast cancer among women
of childbearing age is unarguably a very deadly disease of public health
importance in Oleh community which requires an urgent attention and one the
most important strategies is the practice of breast self-examination (BSE) for
early detection of breast cancer to help increase early detection and reduce the
breast cancer mortality rate in the community and the country as a whole.

Despite the awareness on
Oleh community on the benefits of BSE for early detection of breast cancer,
late presentation of cases at advanced stages when little or no treatment can
be done from any form of therapy has remained the hallmark of breast cancer among
women of childbearing age in Oleh community.

In order for women of
childbearing age to be effective in the practice of BSE they must attain the
appropriate knowledge and attitude towards its practice therefore there is a
need to explore knowledge, attitude, and practice on breast self-examination which directly influence their understanding and practice
of BSE.

In line with the above, the
researcher intends to embark on this research work to assess the knowledge,
attitude and practice of women of childbearing age towards breast
self-examination in Oleh community, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta
State which a view to creating awareness where necessary.
