Signs and symptoms of Ophthalmia Neonatorum

Kummato
(2011) highlighted the signs and symptoms of ophthalmia neonatorum as:
·
Swollen red eyelids due to invasion of micro-organisms.
·
Discharge from the eyes that are purulent due to presence of causative
organism.

·
Inflammation of the eye (oedematoteous conjunctive) due to increased
blood supply to the area to fight against foreign bodies.
·
Pains on the eyes due to inflammation which is as a result of toxin
secreted in the eye.
·
The body temperature is high.
·
Nasal discharge can also occur due to connection of the sense organ.
Bailere
(2012) asserted that sympathetic ophthalmia neonatorum is the inflammation of
the uveal tract of injured eye following a wound involving the uveal tract of
the other eye, resulting in bilaterial glaucomatous (inflammation of the entire
uveal tract). It can also be called sympathetic uveitis.
