SEEKING: PASSIONATE HEAD MIDWIFE
FOR SHANTI MATERNITY AND LEANRING CENTRE IN LUWERO
The Shanti Uganda Society is a Canadian charity dedicated to: lowering maternal and infant mortality rates, reducing HIV/AIDS transmission from mother to child, improving access to education and supplies and honouring birthing woman. In addition to our birth programs we also run a health and wellness program for teen-girls and community development projects.
The Shanti Maternity and Learning Centre is located in Nsaasi Village in the Luwero District. Shanti Maternity and Learning Centre acts as a bridge for safe birthing practices between modern and traditional midwifery. The centre is a place for women to welcome their babies in a safe and encouraging environment. It is also a learning centre for midwives, traditional birth attendants, mothers, students and international volunteers and visitors.

Position Start Date: August 1st, 2011
Contract: 1 year

Qualifications:
Must be a registered midwife and have administrative experience.
Be highly dedicated to Shanti Uganda’s goals and mission and reducing child and maternal mortality rates in Uganda and globally.
Have an open mind to new and traditional birth practices and willing to learn mother-centred birth practices.
Must have strong management and supervisory skills and experience
Must be an effective and engaging teacher.
Must be extremely organized
Believe that birth should be, a welcoming experience for baby, and a peaceful and joyful experience for mothers.
Be registered with The Uganda Nurses and Midwife Council
Must have strong communication and counseling skills as well as a welcoming and friendly attitude.
Must be fluent in English and Luganda
Experience managing a maternity centre or clinic-an asset
Experience working with and/or monitoring international volunteers -an asset.
Knowledge of traditional birth practices in Uganda-an asset
Responsibilities
The head midwife overseas all birth house operations and staff
Maintains a highly organized office, records and reporting system
Supervises five Shanti Uganda midwives
Assist and encourage midwives in learning and following Shanti Uganda birth guidelines
Reports to and works with the Shanti Uganda Project Coordinator
Upholds Shanti Uganda’s mission and values
Is a teacher for local and international students and volunteers.
Offers trainings and workshops to staff, Shanti Uganda beneficiaries and volunteers.
Conducts antenatal clinics, deliveries, post-natal services and outreach.
Conduct engaging health education workshops
Provides family planning services
Conducts immunization services when needed
Conducts workshops and trainings for Ugandan and international mothers, traditional birth attendants, midwives, volunteers and students.
Attends all staff meetings and trainings
Works closely with Shanti Uganda beneficiaries
