Sexual Intercourse in Pregnancy

Sexual intercourse is the act in which the external
male reproductive organ – penis enters the external accessible female
reproductive tract – vagina.
Pregnancy is the fertilization and development of one
or more offspring, known as an embryo or fetus in a woman’s uterus. It is the
common name of gestation in humans.

Comfortable Sexual Position
during Pregnancy
As your pregnancy progresses, you may find that the
missionary position (man on top) isn’t comfortable any more. There are other
positions which are;
1.
Get on top: This position has been
shown to be associated with higher level of sexual satisfaction in pregnant
women. It puts no weight on your abdomen and allows you to control the depth of
penetration.
2.
Lie Sideways: This allows your partner
to keep most of his weight off your uterus.
3.
Use of the Bed as a Prop: Lie on your back at the
edge of the bed with your knees bent and your bottom and feet perched at the
edge of the mattress. Your partner can either knee or stand in front of you.
4.
Lie Side-by-Side in the
Spoon Position:
 This allows for
only shallow penetration. Deep thrusts can become uncomfortable as the months
pass.
5.
Get onto your Hands or
Knees in the Doggy Position:
This is a good position for later on your
pregnancy. When it is relief to have weight taken off your pelvis. If you find
it uncomfortable, ask your partner to thrust less deeply. Getting him to hold a
pillow between your bottom and his lower tummy will prevent him pushing too far
inside you.
6.
Make Love Sitting Down:  This is another position
that put no weight on your uterus. Try sitting on your partner’s lap as he sits
on a chair (study). You can control the rate and depth of penetration by
standing up more or by squatting down.
NOTE: You can have satisfying sex
when pregnant and where there is a will, there is a way! With a little
experimenting, you and your partner are sure to find techniques that work for
you. And keep talking! Communication and openness are the keys to maintaining
or improving sexual satisfaction during your pregnancy
You are advised to avoid sex if you have experience
the following;
1.      Unexplained vaginal
bleeding
2.      Leakage of amniotic fluid
3.      History of premature labour
4.      Other medical conditions
NOTE: Know that sex during
pregnancy is usually quite safe. One of the most common concern about mothers’
and fathers’ to be is that sex will hurt the baby or that they might “bump
into” the baby during sex, but in reality, there is no reason to worry. A
woman’s cervix forms a barrier between her uterus and vagina, cushioning the
baby and preventing harm from occurring. Most women can enjoy a healthy and
intimate relationship throughout their pregnancy, right up until delivery date.
NOTE: And at some point, a
pregnant woman should not be flat on her back because the growing uterus can
compress major blood vessels, it can cause pelvic pressure and pain. This
phenomenon typically occurs during the third trimester. Lying flat on her back
can also cause supine hypertensive syndrome which result in a change in heart
rate and blood pressure.
