The Seasoned Spoon is a non-profit, vegetarian, cooperative café located in
Champlain College at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. As well as
serving delicious, affordable, local, and organic food, we also provide a
number of educational initiatives through volunteer opportunities, workshops,
speakers and cooking classes. We offer employment opportunities to students and
are proud of our strong community linkages with local producers, businesses and
community organizations. We seek to provide a collegial space where we build
community through food.
The Seasoned Spoon Café is offering a part-time, 8 month contract position (25
hours/week, over 29 weeks,
from Sept. 2nd, 2014 until April 10th, 2015). – this
includes a 3 week unpaid break during the month of December. A probationary
review will be take place at the end of the first 3 months.
We are seeking a self-directed individual to work in a leadership role in the
cafe and to help coordinate educational opportunities and events. The café is
closed during exam periods and school holidays including reading weeks and
winter break–there may or may not be work during these times.
Job Description
The Education/Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator will spend part of their
time acting as afternoon kitchen manager, working alongside student staff and
volunteers in the café to direct and oversee daily tasks. Other hours will be
spent organizing workshops, events and other managerial tasks as required. Some
hours will be spent supporting cafe operations, in particular Saturday market
trips at least once a month while the cafe is in operation.
The Education/Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for
training volunteers and supporting student staff and will act as a liaison
between the kitchen and the General Manager. This position will involve
supporting and contributing to promotional activities including social media
management, public speaking, coordinating and attending outreach events, and
assisting with publications such as written materials and posters.
The Education/Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for:
• Providing mentorship and leadership while on site (4 days/week)
• Supervising, training, and directing volunteers
• Helping to oversee day-to-day operations and maintenance of the café in
concert with the Head Cook and General Manager
• Oversee all education and outreach work, including coordinating workshops,
community feasts/meals, events and a potential upcoming conference or any other
large-scale events
• Oversee and contribute to advertizing and membership outreach, including
bi-weekly emails, membership database and website maintenance
• Revise and implement communication strategy with other staff
• Other education and outreach tasks based on the Spoon’s needs and the
Volunteer Coordinator’s interests
• Initiate and monitor new fundraising initiatives
• Maintaining regular communication with the General Manager, Head Cook and
Board of Directors
• Supporting the Head Cook with ordering and sourcing of food
• Adhering to regulations pertaining to Food Handling & Safety as outlined
by the Peterborough City/County Health Unit
• Monthly farmers market pick-ups
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Knowledge and interest in the politics of food and agriculture
• Knowledge of cooking seasonal vegetarian food
• Extensive experience and knowledge of café/restaurant operations and
maintenance
• Experience working with volunteer coordination and event planning
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Experience with social media communication strategies
• Good organizational skills, punctuality, and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a hectic environment
• Food Handlers Certificate
Assets:
• Knowledge of cooperative structures
• Experience preparing gluten-free and vegan foods
• Access to a vehicle
We are looking for someone who understands the Spoon’s role as an experimental
model of an institutionally based alternative and is committed to the Spoon’s
mandate and cooperative structure. The position welcomes creativity and
requires an individual willing to work during café operating hours as well as
one Saturday morning per month. There is the potential for some flexibility in
the completion of administrative or independent tasks.
