In
order to ultimately improve literacy acquisition and learning outcomes in
Rwanda, Save the Children’s Rwanda Children’s Book Initiative (RCBI) vision is
to get ‘more children reading more and better books’. In particular, the
Initiative aims to increase the availability of high quality Kinyarwanda books
in the country and create a national culture of reading.
Consultancy
Objectives
RCBI
supports the publishing industry to produce high quality, age appropriate,
Kinyarwanda children’s books with a focus on ages 0 to 9. In order to create a
sustainable demand and strengthen the children’s book market, booksellers and
publishers need professional training and mentoring. This consultancy seeks to
identify a professional capable of providing professional development
opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge of local children’s book
sellers, marketing agents and publishers.
Scope
of Service
The
consultant shall ensure the completion of the following activities in
accordance with the terms and conditions of the consultancy contract:
The
Consultant is expected to provide the following outcomes as per the detailed
ToR attached, and the Consultant’s proposal:
  1. Provide
    capacity building opportunities to book sellers and publishers
  • Delivering
    a training targeting specific skill development such as understanding the
    mechanisms of the book chain, children’s book publishing, publishing
    management, managing a bookshop, best approaches of book distribution,
    production-demand relationship, use of professional network, digital
    marketing, copyright, tax laws and marketing
  • Develop
    and finalize the outline of the training
  • Develop
    a book selling and book distribution curriculum.
Methodology
  • The
    consultancy will involve training development and curriculum. Each of
    these sessions will be documented in a brief report describing the work
    undertaken and the progress or challenges encountered. 
  • The
    reference point within SCI will be the RCBI manager with expected
    collaboration with RCBI Coordinator and the RCBI Book Development Officer.
Key
selection criteria
  • Degree
    in librarianship, literature or publishing and similar disciplines
  • Experience
    in managing book shops and libraries
  • Proven
    experience delivering trainings to book sellers and publishers
  • Knowledge
    of Save the Children and it’s internal processes will be beneficial but is
    not essential
  • Knowledge
    about the Rwandan book industry
Payment
details
  • Payment
    will be in accordance with a detailed budget breakdown as submitted
    through the proposal, and invoices will be expected from the consultant
    prior to payment

Candidates

  • Detailed
    response to ToR, with specific focus addressing the scope of work,
    methodology to be used and key selection criteria
  • Initial
    work plan based on methodology outlined, and availability of applicant
  • Company
    profile or CV including a minimum of 3 references
  • Detailed
    budget breakdown based on expected daily rates and initial work plan
