A new opportunity exists for an Education Programs Officer:
Responsibilities:
• Coordinate daily operation of RBG’s educational programming for
schools and youth groups, including:
• Coordinating and communicating with a large team (15-20 strong) of
both full-time and casual program delivery staff.
• Consulting with a dedicated Bookings Clerk regarding incoming
bookings, resource allocation and client relations.
• Communicating with clients regarding custom program requests, and
creating adapted programming to meet their needs.
• Liaising with other departments and individuals at RBG including
physical resources staff, custodians, gardens staff, natural lands
staff, web/graphic design and management.
• Processing payments for visiting groups and maintaining accurate
participation numbers.
• Acquisition and management of program materials and supplies.
• Oversee development of new, innovative educational programming and
materials, including:
• Creating new educational programming and materials with an emphasis
on simplicity, inquiry, curriculum-connection and powerful experiences
in nature.
• Supervising and assisting other interpretive staff as they undertake the
same.
• Working with other staff at RBG to develop exciting, new educational
opportunities (ie. Adventure Challenge Course, symposia, etc).
• Assisting in the publication of a yearly programs guide and other
marketing materials.
• Recruit, train and evaluate interpretive staff, including:
• Assessing applicants, interviewing and hiring.
• Training new staff for program delivery, and providing ongoing
training and development opportunities for existing staff.
• Evaluating interpretive staff formally and informally, and providing
avenues for improvement.
• Assist with the supervision, coordination and execution of a large
summer camp program, including:
• Training, supervision and coordination of seasonal camp director and
counsellors.
• Assisting in the development of camp programming, and the
acquisition of camp supplies.
• Assisting directly with camp activities, and acting as the
manager-on-duty on certain days through the camp season.
• As required, deliver school and/or camp programming.
• Other duties as required.
Requirements:
• At least one of the following is essential to this position:
• Post-secondary education in environmental science or other field
relevant to RBG’s mandate.
• Certified teacher and/or other formal training in environmental and
outdoor education.
• An advanced level of training and experience in the field of nature
interpretation or outdoor education.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in planning and delivery of
educational programming in a non-classroom setting. Should include
experience with inquiry-based learning, program development and
delivery, normally obtained through working in an outdoor education
facility front-line or supervisory position.
• Experience coordinating a large body of staff/volunteers, and
communicating with a diverse array of people in varied positions.
• Familiarity with the current Ontario curriculum from early years
through grade 12 (OCT membership in good standing is an asset).
• Advanced knowledge of natural history in Ontario (flora/fauna
identification, biology, ecology, etc.) is a definite asset.
• French language capability is an asset.
• Additional certifications relevant to outdoor education an asset
(First Aid, water safety, ORCKA, leadership, low-ropes, NAI, etc.).
• A clear Statement of Driving Record and satisfactory Police Records
