This is a
non-permanent, temporary appointment through July 31st

Mission

The Roses in
Concrete Community School (“RiC”) will be a K-8 school in East
Oakland founded on the belief that schools

should emphasize knowledge of self,
character, and intellectual growth to prepare students to fundamentally impact
the global society while learning to live, learn, work and thrive in their own
communities.

Our primary goal is
to develop youth committed to lives characterized by self-discipline,
integrity, love and hope in the pursuit of justice and equity for all
communities. We encourage our students, who are broadly invested in academic,
artistic, athletic, and extracurricular pursuits, to demonstrate the spirit of
the Warrior-Scholar. As Warrior-Scholars, our students will cultivate the
courage to stand as warriors on the side of justice while having the scholarly
faculties to decipher where justice resides in a complex society.

Duties and
Responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

  • Crafting
    a three-pronged support structure of parent engagement and leadership
    development while attempting to move each parent to a higher level of
    engagement and support (more detail on each of these items can be
    provided):
    • High
      level engagement
    • Mid
      level engagement
    • Low
      level engagement
  • Recruit
    founding parents for our Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
    and 4th grade classes;
  • Conduct
    and oversee home visits to all parents that notes questions, concerns that
    parents have as well as assessing parent leadership development and
    training to those parents who are interested;
  • Help
    provide training to a group of volunteers/interns/fellowship on the skills
    needed for a successful home visit that maximize parent participation and
    leadership development;
  • Build
    partnerships with allied groups, other political organizations;
  • Overseeing
    the creation of RiC publishing material necessary to conduct on the ground
    grassroots outreach work as well as connections with other organizations
    doing similar work; and
  • Overseeing
    the maintenance of a strong online and social media presence to identify
    opportunities for online & offline organizing & solidarity work.
  • Creation
    of a group of core ‘parents as stewards’ leaders. Each grade should have
    at least three to five dedicated parent leaders who are intimately
    familiar with RiC’s mission and values and who are undergoing leadership
    development and training

Scope and
Nature of Supervision:

  • Must be
    able to act and organize time with extreme independence.
  • A high
    level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently; must
    be able to work with parents, teachers, staff members, and the larger
    community.
  • Must be
    able to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and
    meet established deadlines.
  • Reports
    to the Director of Organizing

Previous
Work Experience

Three to five years
of work in social justice organizing preferably in educational justice work
(but not necessary)

Specialized
Knowledge and Training

  • Must be
    fluent in Spanish (verbal and written)
  • Excellent
    writing, verbal, and analytical communication skills
  • Thorough
    knowledge of organizing and political campaign strategies.
  • Ability
    to develop and train staff and parent leaders in the skills needed for the
    campaign.
  • Ability
    to write and proofread campaign communications materials.
