The MEPI Regional Advisor will support country programs, ministries of health, and universities to institute pre-service and in-service curricula and field experiences pertaining to field epidemiology and other aspects of public health practice. The MEPI Regional Advisor will also collaborate with ongoing efforts of other USG and non-USG partners such as the Global Disease Detection to strengthen disease surveillance, response, biosecurity/biosafety, and improve public health and ensure continued support of Ministries of Health and engage local counterparts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Serve as the lead technical advisor to develop cadres of field epidemiologists who can practice evidence-based public health and strengthen surveillance.
• Strengthen public health workforce capacity to effectively use science-based information for planning, decision making, monitoring and evaluation. The RA shall ensure that medical students and District Health Officers who participate in capacity-building programs achieve the competencies that will lead to improvements in health outcomes and implementation of appropriate and effective public health interventions.
• Develop a training curriculum and implement mentored training based on epidemiologic methods in collaboration with the partners to strengthen outbreak detection and response and disease surveillance at national and sub-national levels.
• Support the development and implementation of surveillance projects for hospital-acquired infections.
• Assists trainees in the design and implementation of applied epidemiological research projects aimed at developing more effective public health interventions.
• Mentors trainees during field activities, including outbreak investigations, surveillance data analysis, and various quality improvement projects.
• Review projects and work conducted by trainees for scientific quality and appropriateness.
• Assist trainees in preparing written and oral scientific presentations/publications.
• Assist the program with the selection, assignments, competency development and supervision of trainees.
• Routinely monitor and report on work conducted by trainees.
• Promote the institutionalization of applied public health capacity development among ministry of health and university partners.
• Support the channeling of broader technical assistance in coordination with the organization’s country offices.
Key Qualifications:
• Completion of the U.S. Epidemic Intelligence Service (required).
• Epidemiologist with at least five years of field experience (required).
• Cross-cultural experience with training health care workers (required).
• Program implementation experience in low-resource settings (required).
• Ability to work in physically-demanding field settings (required).
• Prior public health experience working in East Africa (required).
• Prior experience working in immunization (preferred).
