The major
aim of the study is principally to examine the process and pattern of urban
expansion in Sapele and its effect on criminal activities in the area. The
study is therefore an attempt to explore activities in an urban environment,
which can be regarded as a sociological research in a social problem. The work
is a contribution to the growing literature on
urbanization in Nigeria with the creation of more states and local government headquarters in
recent times, new urban centers have been consequently created, with the creation
of Sapele as a new local government headquarter then in 1989, it is important
to examine the mechanism of urban expansion in the town with sole aim of making
important recommendation to the government with regard to urbanization problem
as they affect economic development.
