Prevention of HIV/AIDS

Circumcision in sub-Saharan Africa reduces the
acquisition of HIV heterosexual men between 28% and 66% over 24 months. Based
on these studies, the World Health Organization and UNAIDS both recommended
male circumcision as a method of preventing female to male transmission.

Programmes to prevent the vertical transmission of HIV
to child can reduce the rate of transmission by 92 – 99%. This primarily
involves the use of a combination of antiretroviral medications during
pregnancy and after birth in the infant and potentially includes bottle feeding
rather than breast feeding.
Consistent condom use reduces the risk of HIV
transmission by proximately 50% over the long lime.
There is evidence that vitamin A supplement in
children reduces mortality and improve growth. In Africa, in nutritionally
compromised pregnant and lactating women, a multivitamin supplement has
improved outcome for both mothers and children.
