Prevalence of helminthic parasites on edible vegetables in markets in Ughelli Metropolis, Delta State

Abstract
Vegetable are good sources of nutrients to human being as well as to
other animals species production strategy of vegetables and common change of
farms and markets by human being, different domestic and wild animals cause
parasitic contamination  on vegetables, a
total of 25 sample of five different vegetables viz. bitterleaf (vermica
amidalne), Tomato (solanum lycopersium), Okra (Abelmoschus esculents),
waterleaf (Talium transulare) and Pumpkin (Tellfaria spp) were collected from
Agbarho, Agbarha, Orogun, Ughelli and Ofuoma markets. 0.15ml of vegetable
suspension from the vegetable sediments mere examined microscopically following
concentration method by formol-ether method revealed overall 12(48%) contaminated
with different helminth. The prevalence of parasitic contamination was on
2(8%), 2(8%), 2(8%) 3(12%) and 3(12%) in samples Agbarho, Agbarha, Orogun,
Ughelli and Ofuoma market respectively of the five vegetables, the highest
contamination was recorded on Tomato 3(60%) waterleaf 3(60%) and the lowest was
bitterleaf 2(40%) and Okra 2(40%) and Pumpkin 2(40%). Although varied from
market to markets, however, Bitterleaf were found to be contaminated with eggs
of H.nana(20%), and Taenia 20% eggs Tomato were contaminated with eggs of
D.nana (20%), eggs of Schistosome (20%), eggs of Taenia 40%. Okra were
contaminated with eggs of Larvae of strongyloie 20%. Waterleaf were
contaminated with teania eggs (20%), Larvea of strongyloides 20% and Direcolium
eggs 20% Pumpkin were contaminated with Vampirolepsis nana 20% and Strongyloides
Larvea 21%. High rate of parasitic contamination in all daily essential
vegetables is alarming for human and animal health especially who handle those
and/or take raw or undercooked without proper washing in fresh water. To
conserve public health it is essentially needed to find out the source of
contamination, ways to minimize those and take effective measure to keep the
vegetables free from parasitic contamination.
