The Centre for Science and Technology Studies
Postdoctoral Researcher, Science-innovation Studies ( 38 hours per week)
Vacancy number: 11-249
The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) investigates the development of science, technology and science-related innovation – often by using large-scale databases of scientific publications and patents. CWTS is a leading provider of science & technology indicators and of performance and benchmark studies of scientific groups and institutes, including bibliometric mapping and network analysis of science. CWTS has developed longstanding relationships with prestigious universities and is a recognized international leader in the field of bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics. The CWTS Leiden Ranking is recognized as one of the most reliable citation-based rankings of large universities. The CWTS information system offers full and unrestricted access to various in-house databases such as Web of Science, Scopus and PATSTAT.
Currently, CWTS is exploring and developing new avenues, including a long-term research programme of science-innovation studies. We are inviting applications for a postdoc position in this new programme, which preferably starts from March 1, 2012.
Tasks:
This position is initially a period of two years, either full-time or part-time. The candidate is expected to make a significant contribution to the on-going research programme on science-innovation studies. You will become a member of a small team within a dynamic working environment, with diversified tasks and opportunities in which you may develop and pursue your own research questions, ideas and interests.
The applicant is expected to participate in various research projects, particularly on topics of university-industry cooperation, science-technology linkages, and geographical dynamics of science and innovation systems. The range of topics will address relevant issues within research management and science & innovation policies.
The projects will engage in modelling, describing and analysing interfaces and interconnections between science, technology and innovation, with a focus on quantitative data and statistical techniques. The activities may include theoretical work, developing and testing of measurement models and performance indicators, conducting case studies, data-mining and database construction, or conducting sophisticated statistical analyses – either for research purposes or solutions for CWTS clients worldwide. Several of these activities and projects are likely to involve international travel.
Requirements:
Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Innovation Studies, Studies of Science and Technology (STS), Economics, Management science, or another field in the social sciences relevant to the indicated fields of expertise. A research background in innovation studies or scientometrics/informetrics is considered a merit. Preference will be given to candidates with an academic drive who have demonstrated their abilities to carry out relevant research at international standards and have published in international peer-reviewed journals. Candidates should be able to work independently as well as cooperate in joint projects. You should have good writing skills in English, as shown in a publication record. In addition to proficiency in English, fluency in Dutch is considered an important asset, but not a condition. Employees who are not functionally fluent in Dutch will be expected to become so over time.
We offer:
As a postdoctoral researcher you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of two years. Depending on the level of education and experience of the candidate salary will be in scale 11, with a maximum of € 4374 per month gross, based on full time employment.
