Postdoctoral position – The contextuality of interpersonal understanding
Applications are invited for a two-year Postdoc position. The Postdoc position is financed by the VELUX Foundation as part of the research project “Empathy and Interpersonal Understanding”. The successful
candidate will be affiliated with the Center for Subjectivity Research, Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, where the project is based, and will be expected to begin on 1 August 2012.
Description of the project
Recent proponents of a phenomenologically inspired embodied and enactive approach to social cognition have emphasized the primacy of the direct face-to-face encounter. But isn´t interpersonal understanding always contextual, and isn´t this something that thinkers in the tradition of phenomenological social theory (such as Heidegger, Gurwitsch and Schutz) have repeatedly emphasized? The aim of the PostDoc project is both historical and systematic. Historically, the aim is to investigate whether the latter view contradicts or rather complements other phenomenologists´ (such as Husserl, Stein and Scheler) emphasis on a more immediate experiential access to the minds of others. Systematically, the project is expected to consider and assess whether interpersonal understanding can be said to be direct and contextual at the same time.
The application should include a proposal outlining the overall aims and methodology of the project as well as a time-plan (see appendix 4).
