Police in Lagos confirmed the death of Joseph Mayowa, a 34-year-old Lagos State Polytechnic student, Ikorodu Campus, who allegedly committed suicide following a misunderstanding with his lover.
Bala Elkana, the spokesperson for the Lagos police, said Friday in a statement that the deceased took a poisonous chemical called a sniper in his house in Ikorodu, Eyita area.
Mr Mayowa was a part-time Hospitality Management Technology Department student. He died Friday’s early hours.
According to Mr Elkana, the Shagamu Road Police Station, Ikorodu, the police received information that Mr Mayowa drank sniper after having misunderstood his lover, Bolaji Olokodana
Ms Olokodana, 24, who was LASPOTECH graduate, was with the deceased when he died, police said.
His neighbors rushed him to hospital after his girlfriend raised an alarm, but eventually died.
“In the statement of his girlfriend, she told police investigators that herself and the deceased dated for nine years,” Mr Elkana said.
“The deceased beats her always. They had a quarrel while she was in his room with the deceased, and he resorted to physical violence as usual.
“Miss Olokodana ran into the rest room to avoid the deceased’s further beating. She found him gasping for breath on her return with an empty sniper bottle next to him.”
Mr Mayowa’s corpse was deposited for autopsy at the General Hospital mortuary.
Investigation is still on, the police said, they are investigating to determine if death is a suicide case or murder.
