One Acre Fund is a
rapidly-growing organization, and increasingly needs structural expansion to
meet this growth. We are looking for someone to develop and coordinate multiple
construction projects to accommodate this organizational growth, including
central and regional offices and residential houses in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania
and Burundi. We are looking for someone to take control of and own the entire
construction process from start to finish via strong leadership of large
construction teams located in several different countries.
This is an
incredible opportunity to contribute significantly to East Africa’s
infrastructure by taking on a challenging management role, while enabling One
Acre Fund to extend its impact more quickly. You will begin immediately as the
department director and will be generally responsible for three to five major
construction projects over the next two years in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.
You will be in charge of a large and growing team of international and local
staff and gathering all the necessary resources to complete the construction
projects from start to finish, including Project Managers for each individual
country projects.
- Construction: we are
looking for someone to own the entire construction process for several
large construction projects in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania initially, with
high potential for further construction projects later.
- Construction
team expansion - You
will be responsible for growing and developing a large construction team
of international and local construction managers, local contractors and
laborers. - We
already have fantastic teams in Kenya and Rwanda – for example, we have a
Stanford graduate in our team who recently completed an MA in Sustainable
Construction and Design, with experience working on US embassy buildings
in the Dominican Republic. - You
will be responsible for further building this team in all sites and
gathering all the resources necessary for the completion of projects.
- Infrastructure
projects - You
will be responsible for working with project managers on several
large-scale construction projects in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi.
These projects are a combination of large central offices, smaller
regional offices, and residential housing compounds. - Via
your project managers, you will be ultimately responsible for
coordinating all phases of these project, including: - Land
scouting, purchase and transfer - Planning
and regulation documentation - Interior
and exterior design, landscaping - Work
and project planning - Materials
procurement, inventory management, quantity surveying - Contractor
management, quality control - Finishings,
design, logistics of resource transfer, etc. - Budgeting
and accounting
- Growth
strategy and needs assessment - You
will be responsible for coordinating with 1AF stakeholders to help
identify future infrastructure needs and potential projects, as well as
upgrading and maintaining existing infrastructure.
- Long-term
career growth and development - We
would very much like the successful candidate in this position to
eventually be leading a large and permanent team of Construction Project
Managers, plus a large group of various contractors. - We
will grow as an organization from 1,500 total staff to 4,000 total staff
in the next three years, and 70 international staff to 150+. Rapid
organization growth means rapid career growth, and we want to emphasize
that there is real opportunity here for a key leadership role within One
Acre Fund, rather than just a short/medium term job.
Qualifications
We are seeking
exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of solid construction work
experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for international development.
Ideally, this candidate will have managed large-scale construction projects in
the developing world. They will need to be able to coordinate several
large-scale construction projects simultaneously via strong leadership of a
large construction team.

- Strong
construction management work experiences: Examples might include managing
projects at a school, hospital, office or residential housing unit. The
ideal candidate will have coordinated construction projects from the
ground up in both the Western and developing worlds (although this is not
a requirement), including building the necessary teams for that project. - Top-performing
academic background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume) in
Construction Management, Structural Engineering or a similar degree. - Humility
and personal stability. We have a fantastic and likeable team. We are
looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills
with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service. - A
willingness to commit to living in rural areas in East Africa for at least
two years – this is a long-term, career-track role. - Language:
English required, Swahili and/or French nice-to-have - Ability
to cook/laugh – desirable.

Compensation: Starts modest. However, this
is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful
salary for long-term placement in developing nations.
