Department
The Health and Policy Department provides strategic and technical leadership and support to ensure the effective development and implementation of quality health programmes and enhance Merlin’s health sector profile in the UK and internationally, in order to implement Merlin’s mission and achieve the organisational goals and strategy.
The department works with the country teams and head office departments to continually improve the technical quality and impact of Merlin’s work to realise improved health outcomes within target populations.
Main purpose of the role
The Head of Health is responsible for providing strong strategic and technical leadership to ensure the effective development and implementation of quality health programmes based on best practice to address the major health burdens experienced by targeted populations in countries affected by and/or recovering from acute and protracted humanitarian crises. In addition, the post-holder directly contributes to the expansion of Merlin’s organisational impact, health sector profile and influence on policy and practice through associated health related activities.
Overall Objectives (scope)
This role will:
• Provide strong strategic and technical leadership on the health aspects of programme strategy, planning and development through direct technical guidance and support to the health team, Regional Programme Managers, Merlin Response Team and International Director at Head Office and field based Country Directors and Country Health Directors.
• Actively develop the health portfolio and its contribution to organisational strategy and be able to demonstrate its quality and effectiveness against Merlin and internationally recognised standards.
• Actively contribute to enhancing Merlin’s health sector impact, profile and influence on policy and practice through the promotion of evidence based dialogue and engagement in relevant UK and international fora.
• Engage effectively with all supporting teams, including the International Programmes, Merlin Response Team, Programme Funding Unit, Finance, Logistics, Human Resources, Marketing and Communications and Learning and Development.
• Hold the Health Team to account for the delivery of agreed targets/goals and assist them with the support and development of their Country Health Directors.
• Line manage the Health Team
