The Long Point
Region Conservation Authority invites applications for the Assistant GIS
Technician. The successful candidate will assist the Watershed Services
Department in a variety of tasks relating to developing and populating spatial
databases, hazard mapping, data management and map preparation to support
programs of the Conservation Authority. This job placement will provide an
opportunity for youth to build skills and confidence, get valuable work experience
and connect with an employer.
Responsibilities:
- Assist
with the compilation, manipulation, maintenance and map preparation of
Conservation Authority data in support of all departments/programs. - Perform
on-going spatial data maintenance, modeling, or analysis, using advanced
spatial analysis, data manipulation, or cartography software. - Create,
maintain or modify existing GIS databases. - Enter
data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry,
keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or
automatic conversion to vectors, or conversion of other sources of digital
data. - Collect
data in the field using surveying equipment, GPS units and/or other
specialized equipment; working outdoors will be required. - Perform
routine office tasks including data and file management and library
organization. - Working
knowledge ofEmployment Standards Act,Occupational Health and Safety Actand
WSIB requirements.
Qualifications:
- Candidates
must be eligible to work in Canada, be a resident of Ontario and be 30
years of age or under - Must be
returning to school full-time in the fall
- Currently
enrolled as a full-time student in Geomatic Studies, Geography,
Environmental Studies, or like program at an accredited University or
College.
- Proficiency
with ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access). - Ability
to read and comprehend topographic maps and engineering drawings. - Ability
to follow specific instructions, work independently with limited
supervision, and display initiative and a high level of self-motivation. - Ability
to multi-task and work cooperatively in a team framework is also required. - Ability
to use sound judgment and play close attention to detail. - Computer
skills and experience with GIS and databases are necessary. - Possess
a valid driver’s license. - Must
provide a satisfactory police record check and drivers abstract.
