Knowledge Gap Associated with Land Snail Consumption

According to Uboh, Ebong and Mbi (2010) there are several
superstitious beliefs on the consumption of land snail in some parts of Nigeria;
for example in Ishan, Afemai and some Isoko
communities, pregnant and lactating mothers are forbidden from consuming
land snail on the ground that their children will salivate excessively, while
others believed that children of pregnant and lactating mothers who consume land
snail finds it very difficult to walk and even when they started walking, they
will remain sluggish through their life.

There is a cultural discrimination of some species of land snails
in different cultures in Southern Nigeria on an unproven believe that land snail
contains mineral and toxicant compositions such as phytate, oxalate and
hydrocyanic acid content at a level that is harmful to man (Uboh et al., 2002).
