OVERVIEW/SUMMARY
The
Senior Nutrition Officer (SNO) will lead the implementation of all nutrition
related activities at the IRC run health facilities and communities in the
refugee settlement and the surrounding host communities in Lamwo. The SNO will
be responsible for providing training (nutrition), coaching, mentorship and
technical support, including M&E for the nutrition program. Key areas will
include, but not limited to the detection and treatment of acute cases of
malnutrition; implementation of the prevention package of IMAM, IYCF, Maternal
Child Health and Nutrition; supporting VHT (Village Health Teams) activities
that include surveillance and patient follow up; and preparing and submission
of donor reports as required.
SPECIFIC
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide overal technical leadership and direction to nutrition activities being
implemented Palabek settlement in line with the UNHCR technical narrative,
workplans and targets.
  • Liaise
    with the nutrition stakeholders such as UNHCR, UNICEF, other implementing
    NGOs, District Health Team for the smooth implementation of nutrition
    related activities.
  • Monitor
    IMAM services at health facility level and growth monitoring and nutrition
    screening during outreaches – adherence to protocols, staff levels and
    performance.
  • Manage
    all the staff implementing nutrition activities in the Palabek settlement
    and at the ITC at Padibe health centre IV.
  • Provide
    mentoring and capacity building advice/support to the IRC staff in the
    development of plans and implementation of IMAM activities for each of the
    specific components of the nutrition activities.
  • Ensure
    that there adequate stock of nutrition program supplies for the smooth
    implemenation of activities.
  • Monitor
    nutritional surveillance activities of VHTs and manage support necessary
    to ensure surveillance is done properly, including training as required.
  • Support
    health facilities to ensure IMAM protocols are adhered to, and provide
    targeted training and support where required.
  • Support
    and/or implement training in core project components (IYCF & GMP,
    Maternal Nutrition and Health, Hygiene and Sanitation and Malnutrition in
    children and nutrition screening).
  • Lead
    the training of health facility staff on IYCF, GMP, IMAM and other related
    nutrition techniques.
  • Lead
    the compilation, analysis, and reporting of nutritional or other related
    data.
  • Coordinate
    work plan activities with health workers as per work plan.
  • Liase
    with Supplementary Feeding partner on an ongoing basis to ensure alignment
    of IMAM components.
  • Lead
    community based activities such as conducting mass screening for children
    under-fives regularly in collaboration with community health volunteers.
  • Monitor
    implementation of nutrition related activities.
  • Represent
    IRC at Nutrition related meetings/events in Palabek settlement/other
    operational; areas as requested by direct supervisor.

Note:

The role of the Senior Nutrition Officer cannot be limited to the specific
duties and tasks detailed herein. The success of the IRC’s humanitarian mission
is the highest priority and all issues which arise must be addressed
accordingly. Therefore, S/he will be required to manage all unforeseen issues
and circumstances and remain flexible to perform any other duties, as and when
required.
REQUIREMENTS/
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
·
A Bachelor degree in Nutrition.
·
Must be registered with Uganda Ministry of Health.
Experience
·
At least 5 years relevant experience in IMAM, Emergency Nutrition in a challenging
environment.
·
Previous experience of nutrition programming including IMAM in a refugee/
setting preferred.
·
Have work experience in management of a nutrition program that includes and not
limited to project implementation, monitoring and reporting.
·
Have experience in staff management.
·
Experience of working in partnership with district local government and local
health services including VHTs is essential.
·
Experience of training/capacity building of program staff
Skills
and Abilities
·
Good analytical, monitoring and evaluation skills and the ability to write good
quality proposals and reports in English.
·
Good networking and coordination skills – NGOs, UN and government agencies.
·
Good organisational, negotiation, interpersonal and communications skills with
ability to build and lead a team.
·
Flexible, reliable, culturally sensitive and with the ability to work in
isolated and stressful environments and under pressure, and able to work with
minimal supervision.
·
Language Skills: English. Knowledge of local Acholi language is an
advantage.
