Incidence of ABO blood group

The distribution of the ABO blood groups varies strinckingly in
different parts of the world, different races have a predominate of different
ABO groups relatives to others, and there are variations in blood group
distribution within the human sub-population (ethnic group).

In Nigeria, distribution of ABO blood groups differ among ethnic group,
some of them are highlighted as follows:
Literature search shows that there is a death of information about the
ethnic variances among indigenes of Benue state, where the highest number of
unique tribes TIV, Idoma, Igede a minority of other tribes reside. A total of
1,672 newly admitted students were randomly recruited for the study, thus
consists of 930 males and 742 females, the tribes of these students were
obtained, ABO blood group was carried out by antigen-antibody agglutination
test. Results revealed that the tribal distribution of the sample population
was 920 (55.0%) belong to TIV tribe, 425 (25.4%) Idoma, 270 (16.1%) Igede and
57 (3.4%) were other tribes. The distribution of ABO blood group showed that
blood group O constituted 52.5% (n=919), followed by B with 24.5% (n=409) group
A was 18.4% (n=309) and AB was 2.2% (n=37) (Mohammed, 2012).
In the Benin ethnic group of southern-Niger 600 apparently healthy
residents of the community aged 18-60 years were used for a research on
predominant ABO blood groups, Data obtained was analyzed using frequency table.
Blood group O was the commonest constituting 56.5% followed by A (26.3%) and B
(15%) while AB was the least with a distribution of 4.3% respectively
(Ikponmwen, 2012).
