Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Reports to: Arctic Campaign Coordinator
Starting Annual Salary: $ 44,569 and an excellent benefits package
Closing date for applicants: November 7, 2014
Temperatures are rising faster at the top of the world than anywhere
else on Earth. And,
as we are witnessing, Arctic sea ice is melting
even more rapidly than climate scientists had predicted. In the
Arctic, this means dramatic impacts on the landscape, on animals, and
on Indigenous communities and cultures. Beyond the Arctic, it means
accelerated climate impacts and more frequent and severe extreme
weather events. But instead of seeing this rapid melt as a grave
warning to humanity, governments and oil companies are seeing it as an
opportunity to drill for more of the fossil fuels that got us into
this mess in the first place. For these reasons and more, Greenpeace
Canada has decided to play a bigger role in its protection.
Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, nonprofit organization
that works to protect the environment. We challenge government and
industry to halt harmful practices by negotiating solutions,
conducting scientific research, introducing clean alternatives,
carrying out peaceful acts of civil disobedience and educating and
engaging the public. To maintain independence Greenpeace does not
accept donations from corporations or governments and is a non-profit
organization not a registered charity. Greenpeace relies on individual
donors and creative partnerships to fund our environmental campaigns.
Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced campaigner to fill a new
position with the organization. The person in this position will
coordinate Greenpeace’s global work on Arctic oil regulation and work
as part of a broader Arctic campaign team. You must have at least four
years experience in campaigning, communication or other related areas,
and a proven track record of developing and implementing successful
campaign strategies, and an aptitude for political and regulatory
work. Bilingualism (English/French) is a very strong asset.
As a Greenpeace Arctic campaigner you will represent Greenpeace Canada
to the media, community members, other Greenpeace national offices,
foundations, and senior officials in government and industry. The
successful applicant will have experience with making sound strategic
campaign decisions, have strong communications skills, both verbal and
written, be extremely well-organized and understand and support
Greenpeace’s style of campaigning.
Required Skills and Experience:
• A demonstrated commitment, knowledge and passion for environmental
and social justice issues;
• Excellent strategic thinking, negotiation and campaign planning skills;
• Demonstrated analytical skills;
• Ability to coordinate projects from a distance, involving multiple
offices in a global environment;
• Ability to relate effectively and work collaboratively with people
from diverse backgrounds including First Nations, Inuit,
environmentalists, and policymakers;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including public
speaking and presentation skills, as well as strong listening
abilities;
• Leadership and judgement skills;
• Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and proceed
with objectives without supervision, yet participate effectively as
part of a team;
• Flexible personality;
• Proven political experience, including lobbying and
political/regulatory strategy;
• Prior knowledge of Arctic issues and/or the oil industry and oil
regulation would be a very strong asset.
You will work with colleagues in Canada and around the world and must
be able to travel, including internationally. The ability to work
weekends and evenings is sometimes required.
Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign
tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
