Green Timbers Heritage Society SNAP Program Coordinator, Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership Job Vacancy in Surrey, British Columbia

Term: early March to early September, 2012
Hours: 40 hours/week, fluctuating Mon-Fri or Tues-Sat as required, with some evening work.

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is hiring a Coordinator for the Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership (SNAP) summer program. The SNAP program is a unique partnership involving three local non-profit groups and Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture. The goals of the program are to: 1) restore and enhance Surrey’s
natural area parks; 2) provide environmental education to the community; 3) encourage the public to become stewards of natural areas; and 4) raise awareness and promote the care of boulevard trees. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the supervision, administration, and coordination of 11-15 staff in 4 program areas: Habitat Restoration, Environmental Outreach, Environmental Education, and Volunteer Programs.

Duties
– Review 2011 program and complete 2012 summer work plans
– Select 2012 SNAP Team, including screening resumes, interviewing candidates and calling references
– Supervise SNAP Habitat Restoration Team carrying out invasive plant species and yard waste removal, maintenance of previous SNAP restoration sites, and other related activities
– Provide guidance to Habitat Restoration Team Leaders
– Supervise SNAP Outreach Team carrying out environmental and tree care outreach (e.g. distributing pamphlets door-to-door, conducting surveys, attending community events with environmental outreach information, and leading community stewardship and awareness events)
– Supervise the Volunteer Coordinator carrying out volunteer recruitment and management.
– Provide administrative support to SNAP Environmental Education Team
– Complete administrative duties such as payroll and budget tracking
– Communicate with the public and park neighbours, particularly in relation to appropriate park use and impacts on the environment
– Liaise with project partners to develop programs and create work plans on an ongoing basis
– Promote the SNAP program through local media such as newspapers, TV and radio
– Assist with the coordination of program logistics (truck rentals, equipment, phones, etc.)
– Ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner by assisting with training and conducting regular safety inspections
– Assist with the creation of summary reports and presentations for the 2012 program, as well as funding proposals and funding reports

Required Qualifications
– Completion of or enrolment in an undergraduate degree or two year diploma program in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography or related discipline
– Strong leadership and organizational skills, and supervisory experience
– Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
– Demonstrated ability to ID native and invasive plants and knowledge of ecological principles
– Demonstrated willingness and ability to perform repetitive, physical work in all weather
– Experience working with the public and/or children
– A valid unrestricted BC Driver’s License
– Must have access to a personal vehicle (mileage expenses will be reimbursed)
– Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification will be required as a condition of employment
– Completion of a criminal record check will be required as a condition of employment
