Fully Funded PhD Scholarship for Nigerian Scholars

Applications
are invited for fully funded PhD Scholarship for Nigerian scholars in a project
named “The Benin Bronzes: Globalizing the colonial looting of art”. The
scholarship is awarded to work both in Nigeria and with our research team in
Hamburg/Germany on a research project covering the looting, collecting and
exhibition of the well-known bronze sculptures from Benin.

This
scholarship aims to assist high achieving and highly motivated international
research scholars at Hamburg University.
The
University of Hamburg is a comprehensive university in Hamburg, Germany. It was
founded on 28 March 1919, having grown out of the previous General lecture
system and the Colonial Institute of Hamburg as well as the Academic Gymnasium.

Eligibility: The following
criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the
scholarship:
  • University
    is looking particularly for a historian who is willing to undertake
    research for a Ph.D. in history, working on the occupation of Benin City
    by British forces in 1897 and the looting of the city as well as the ways
    in which the artifacts were distributed amongst the colonial forces and
    removed from the colony and brought to Europe.

Requirements: Applicants must have their previous degree.

Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need
to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be
able to study there.

preliminary ideas about the individual research project, a sample of prior
writing and two letters of reference (including the names and addresses -incl.
