Fertile Ground is a 5 acre, certified organic vegetable farm located
just 15 minutes west of Waterloo. We
grow a wide variety of vegetables
for distribution in the Kitchener-Waterloo area through our 150 share
CSA, local cafes and a local Buying Club. We also maintain a flock of
65 laying hens to produce eggs for ourselves and our CSA. We are
committed to community-building and drawing people into the story of
their food. We have an active volunteer base and are always looking
for ways to create opportunities for community interaction and
involvement.
Our team will include the Lead Farmer, Field Manager, 3 staff/interns
and plenty of volunteers.
Intern Positions: No prior experience required, but must have a keen
interest in experiencing a full season immersed in the hard work of
organic farming. Physical strength and stamina are important, as is
commitment to a full season of working and learning. A full-time
novice intern will receive a stipend of $400/mth + room/board. The
position runs from May 1 – Nov 1, 2015.
Housing: Room & board provided on-farm. Private sleeping/lounge area
with shared kitchen/bathroom.
Educational Opportunities:
Fertile Ground was begun directly out of a CRAFT internship and is now
entering its 8th season of operation. Interns are involved in the
following areas:
• Greenhouse management & seedling production
• Seeding and transplanting
• Weed management & pest control
• Irrigation
• Fertility management & soil-building practices
• Volunteer supervision & mentoring
• Harvest & postharvest handling
• CSA pick-ups
• Chicken care
• Tractor work with our large & small FarmAlls (if deemed appropriate)
• Experimental seed saving gardens
In addition to experiential learning at the farm and CRAFT days, we
arrange for 3-4 additional tours or workshop days. We are committed to
developing an educational focus and level of responsibility that
matches with experience level & interests.
