association and public affairs executive to provide staff leadership and
support as its Executive Director.

The
Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the successful leadership and
management of Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums – Aquariums et Zoos
Accrédités du Canada (CAZA/AZAC) according to the strategic direction set by
the Board of Directors.

PRIMARY
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works
with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to
guide the organization - Works
with Board and its committees to prepare comprehensive annual budgets
within multi-year financial frameworks - Identifies,
assesses, and informs the Board of Directors of internal and external
issues that affect the organization and Canada’s accredited zoo and
aquarium community - Fosters
strategic networks and connections with governments and their agencies,
stakeholder organizations and academia - Acts
as spokesperson for the organization before all of its principal audiences - Develops
and implements operational plans incorporating goals and objectives that
align with the strategic direction of the organization - Oversees
the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization - Supports
the decision-making role of the Board and its committees by preparing
meeting agenda and supporting materials including background and decision
memoranda - Supervises,
coaches and mentors staff as appropriate to improve performance
Qualifications:
Experience
- A
minimum of seven (7) years of progressive association management
experience or a blend of association and other relevant management
experience - Significant
experience working with volunteer boards and committees - Significant
experience and proven track record in government relations, advocacy
communications, issue management and public affairs - Significant
experience and proven track record in media relations, including in a
spokesperson role
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge
and understanding of leadership and management principles, including
governance models, as they relate to non-profit organizations - Knowledge
and understanding of the working of governments (all levels) as well as
public sector decision-making - Effective
and compelling public speaking and presentation style - Knowledge
of all relevant federal and provincial legislation applicable to
non-profit sector organizations including: lobbyist registration,
employment standards, charities, taxation, etc. - Knowledge
and understanding of human resources management principles and practices - Knowledge
and understanding of financial management principles and practices - Proven
ability to write effectively for a variety of media - Knowledge
and understanding of principles of effective communication in multiple
media - Bilingualism
(spoken and written) is a requirement.
