Scholarship Description: Land management decisions determine the production of agricultural and
forestry outputs. But they also have implications for the production of
non-marketed ecosystem goods and services such as water purification and
regulation. Shortages of ecosystem services can substantially curtail the
livelihoods of particularly the rural poor in developing countries who vitally
depend on land productivity and natural resources. The successful candidate is
expected to advance the field of environmental valuation and apply innovative
valuation methodologies to assess the monetary impacts of land management
decisions with respect to non-marketed ecosystem services in the West African
Sudanian Savannah region. The scholarship is part of the newly created West
African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.
