According to Terence (1998), the following group of diseases is associated with poor environmental sanitation.
- Water related diseases
- Vectors related disease
- Airborne diseases
- Rodents infestation
- Food related diseases
- Water related disease
Insanitary condition or poor environmental condition of a community, indiscriminate disposal of refuse or waste to water bodies can cause pollution or contamination of water. Examples of the diseases associated with such condition are cholera, typhoid, dysentery, etc.
- Water related diseases
These diseases are caused by insects vectors in the environment that are living freely as a result of insanitary condition e. g overgrown weeds, poor refuse collection and disposal. These vectors transmit diseases either through biting/piecing of man skin to suck blood. Examples of such diseases are malaria fever, yellow fever, trypanosomiasis, etc.
- Airborne disease
Airborne disease arises from insanitary condition that could be a result of poor ventilation, overcrowding in house and community activities such diseases are asthma, tuberculosis (TB), etc.
- Rodent infestation
This result from storage, collection and final disposal of refuse and poor environment management of wastewater (sewage) such disease are laser fever etc.
- Food related diseases
This result from insanitary handling of food preparation, and preserving in a dirty environment and poor personal hygiene. Examples of such disease are typhoid fever, dysentery, salmonellosis, shigellosis, food poisoning, etc.
