The Couchiching Conservancy is a recognized member of the Ontario Land Trust
Alliance and is a non-profit, non-government organization operating since 1993.
During that time The Conservancy has protected over 10,000 acres of
environmentally significant lands in the Couchiching Region.
Reporting relationship: The Conservation Assistant will report directly to the
Stewardship Coordinator.
This summer position is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable work
experience that will help with the development of a career in the environmental
field. Candidates must be either coming from school or returning to school in
the fall.
Demonstrated knowledge in the following
• Post secondary education in environmental science, wildlife ecology,
environmental planning or related field of study,
• Demonstrated environmental knowledge and understanding of ecological
principles, including ecological management, and planning,
• Excellent plant identification skills, familiarity with field monitoring
techniques,
• Familiarity with local forest, grassland and wetland communities and species,
• Ability to identify species at risk and non-native, invasive species,
• Ability to conduct early morning avian monitoring program for species at
risk;
• Experience with Ecological Land Classification,
• Excellent time management, communication and interpersonal skills,
• Ability to work independently and to take initiative on projects,
• Ability to work outdoors and in adverse conditions, ability to work
occasional evenings and weekends,
• Must have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
Responsibilities
• Collection of biological field data for baseline documentation reports and annual
monitoring reports,
• Implement activities based on property management plans, including invasive
species management, trail maintenance, species monitoring,
• Under supervision, assist in the management of nature reserves,
• Compilation of data, development and implementation of property management
plans,
• Assist the delivery of programs and projects for multiple species at risk and
other ecological values on conservation lands,
• Assist with management and development of control plans for invasive species,
• Assist with the collection and analysis of field data on bird populations,
species at risk and vegetation assessments,
• Manage and expand the current database for landowners associated with reserve
properties,
• Promote and raise awareness of Conservancy activities and practices and
delivering public education at events, provide staff support for special
events,
• Address other stewardship issues as required.
Salary range: $11.00 based on qualifications
During the interview, successful applicants will be required to complete a test
on species identification.
