Abstract
This research work is aimed at finding the causes
of drug abuse and its effects on secondary school students in Nsukwa, Aniocha
South Local Government Area, Delta State. The purpose of this study to determine
the causes of drug abuse among secondary school
students, the effects of drug abuse on secondary school students and measure to
minimize drug abuse by secondary school students. The descriptive survey design method was used for
the study while the stratified and simple random sampling method was used to
select a sample size of 100 respondents. A self-structured questionnaire was
used as instrument for data collection to elicit responses from the
respondents. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency
table. The results obtained reveal that secondary
students in Nsukwu community engage in drug abuse as a result of certain factors which include
academic stress, peer group influence, drug experiment, etc. it also revealed
that drug abuse has effects on secondary school students in Nsukwa
community. Based
on the findings, the researcher recommends that the general public should
ensure a safe and drug-free schools and
communities to minimize the involvement of students in drug abuse.
