Burns
Burns are caused by dry sources
of heat or by contact with strong alkalis and acids, or any form of flame or
hot surface like lighted cigarettes.
Causes of Burns

Flames from a fire, hot
metals, electric or gas fires or coming in contact with live electric wires,
lighting, friction, for example, involving wheel, strong acids such as carbolic
acid (phenol), sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid and Lysol, strong alkalis,
such as caustic soda, caustic potash and strong ammonia.

Signs and Symptoms of Burns
(1)If the air ways are
involved, it might lead to breathing problems (2) Injuries (3) Reduces fluids
from body hence can lead to shock (4) Associated with pain (5) Infections (6) Scars
(7) Deformity (8) Swelling
Scalds
Scalds are caused by moist
heat.
Causes of Scalds
Boiling water, steam, any
other hot liquid such as tea, cooking fat or oil.
First Aid Treatment for Burns and Scalds
1.      Put out fire if clothes
catch fire.
2.      Take victim to a safe
place.
3.      Apply cold water to
affected parts, soak burnt area intermittently in ice water or apply cold
towel.
4.      Cover burnt area quickly
with sterile dressing or with any clean cloth. Never use adhesive, dry or
fluffy dressing. Do not apply ointment, oil, etc.
5.      Do not remove clothes that
stick to burns.
6.      Do not break blisters or
remove loose skin
7.      Take victim to hospital.
