We opened the Black Duck in 2013 serving only espresso, driven by our
desire to build a downtown space for conversation and connection, and
by our love of an excellent cup of coffee. Quickly our love of quality
local food caught up and we haven’t looked back since, serving an
ever-changing seasonally inspired menu for breakfast, lunch and
dinner, seven days a week. We have quickly become both a centre for
our loyal local clientele and a destination for food-conscious
travelers.

This summer we will add an adjacent dining room. Our menu will
continue to focus on connections to our region’s farmers and food
producers, and ingredients grown, crafted and foraged by us at the
Black Duck.

We are seeking motivated people who want to work and learn with us.

We are looking for people with:
• an excellent understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients,
equipment and procedures;
• a passion for good food;
• experience in a café and/or restaurant environment;
• knowledge of / interest in sustainable food systems;
• attention to detail, ability to follow recipes;
• interest and knowledge about the food system and farming;
• respect for coworkers, working as a member of a team;
• flexibility – we are a growing business so things change quickly;
• able bodied, lifting up to 25kg and climbing stairs;
• familiarity with sanitary guidelines and health regulations;

Day to day you can expect to be making menu items to order, preparing
house-made ingredients in the kitchen, cooking and plating menu items,
stocking shelves, maintaining equipment, working with Chef, Sous-Chef,
other cooks and baristas on a variety of tasks.

There will also be opportunities to visit to tend the backyard garden
and pick ingredients; u-pick and process perfectly ripe fruit; visit
area Farmers Markets and farms to pick up orders; spend time in the
smokehouse with pork belly and a probe thermometer, and more. If you
are interested in learning about the operation of a small local food
restaurant then ask lots of questions and we are happy to share what
we have learned.

Wages start above minimum wage, plus tips and staff discount.
Currently we are looking for someone to work full-time hours, starting
immediately. We are expanding so advancement opportunities will be
available.
