Job description: To community organize. Expand the reach
of BC ACORN’s economic justice campaigns in low-to-moderate income
neighbourhoods. The job will include, direct door to door contact, follow ups
(second) visits to newly engaged people, phone banking, helping our membership
plan meetings / actions and help develop the campaign strategies that make up
ACORN’s ongoing social and economic justice campaigns.
ACORN is a union in the
community. Like any union our members pay membership dues so that they can have
a sustainable independent organization to fight for their interest. This is a
part of everyone’s job at ACORN.
What we are looking for: We organize in the field predominately
when working people are at home — between 3PM and 9PM — and overall building
a community organization which purpose is to win for low and moderate income
people is hard work.
No experience is
required. Professional organizing training provided. Room for advancement in
organization is available.
Positions available: Full time and part time
About ACORN Campaigns: ACORN’s campaigns are unique and have a
high impact for low-to-moderate income people. For example, our Remittance
Justice Campaign seeks to fix a regulatory loop-hole that exists in Canada.
This regulatory gap allows money transfer companies like Western Union to
charge people 15% and up on all money transfers that families send to support
families around the world. This amounts to a legal theft that is robbing
massive amounts of money from low-to moderate income neighbourhood across
Canada. Much like in ACORN’s successful Payday Lending Campaign, ACORN’s
Remittance Justice Campaign seeks to change this by winning a legislated
victory, and we are moving towards that goal.

Justice or about any other of the campaigns that successful applicants will be
involved with (Minimum / Living Wage; Digital Access; Healthy Homes) check out

More on ACORN: For a decade ACORN Canada has been
building capacity for low and moderate income people so they can champion their
own issues to the powers that be. From our successful pay day lending
regulations campaign to winning improvements to enforcement of municipal
housing standards, ACORN Canada has demonstrated how to effectively make
community change through a membership model of community organizing.
