Position
Summary
The
Alberta Environmental Network (“AEN”) is a non-profit, non-partisan
organization comprised of groups throughout Alberta dedicated to helping
preserve and protect Alberta’s environment.

The AEN’s purpose is to facilitate
the sharing of information and resources among member groups, and to assist
them in taking common action. The AEN also promotes awareness of environmental
issues and activities with stakeholders and the general public. The AEN
facilitates member group meetings and the participation of member groups in
meetings and consultation with government and/or industry.

The
Network Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of
the AEN’s programs, activities, and staff. This leadership is provided
according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors and approved
policy guidelines. The Network Director builds positive working relationships
with network members, partners, government agencies, and funders.
Duties
& Responsibilities
Programming
Related Duties (75%)
The
Network Director’s main priority is overseeing and managing the AEN’s main
programs, as outlined below. Working with the Network Administrator and the
Board of Directors, he/she will be responsible to review existing programs on
an ongoing basis to ensure programming aligns with AEN’s priorities.
  1. Environmental
    Working Group Facilitation & Collaboration

    • Organize
      and coordinate collaborative engagement opportunities for network members
      to identify and address network priorities, ensuring appropriate network
      members and partners are included.
    • Employ
      effective facilitation techniques for collaborative efforts using social
      change theories (such as collective impact or constellation modelling).
    • Identify
      priority needs, action items, and content arising from working group
      meetings and facilitate action, communication and coordination among
      members.
    • Organize
      and facilitate working group communications to the Board and network at
      large.
  2. Government,
    Industry, and Community Partner Engagement
    • Build
      and/or maintain AEN relationships with government, industry, and First
      Nations communities, and facilitate conversations and collaboration with
      network members.Work with AEN partners to identify engagement and
      consultation opportunities for network members, and negotiate contracts
      for reimbursement for member’s participation.
    • Communicate
      potential engagement opportunities to the network, and facilitate the
      network’s selection of representatives for working groups.
    • Facilitate
      communication and information sharing between representatives from
      working groups and the network.
  3. Delivery
    of Training and Professional Development Programs

    • Survey
      AEN members on an as-needed basis for skill sets and expertise to
      identify member learning needs.
    • Organize
      and implement professional development training for members and partners
      by developing agendas and materials, and working with content experts to
      deliver training (such as for media relations, government relations,
      information technology, technical writing, etc.).
  4. Facilitation
    of Biannual Network Assembly
    • Work
      with the Board and the AEN Network Administrator to organize and
      coordinate biannual assemblies for the AEN membership.
    • Identify
      workshops, training programs, and information sessions according to
      members’ needs and current environmental issues facing AEN working
      groups.
    • Work
      with the Board to arrange partnership opportunities for the event.
Administrative
Duties (25%)
The
Network Director’s secondary responsibility is to oversee certain administrative
duties of the AEN, such as overseeing operations, human resources, and
communications. The qualified candidate must be organized, disciplined, and
able to manage his or her time efficiently.
  1. Program
    Network Administration
    • Work
      with Network Administrator to maintain the general operations of the AEN
      and provide regular updates to the Board on operations-related issues.
    • Work
      with Board to recruit membership to the Network.
    • Work
      with Network Administrator to ensure timely and well-organized communications
      between AEN working groups.
  2. Communications
    • Work
      with the Board to develop a strategic communication plan, and review the
      plan on an annual basis.
    • Work
      with/oversee network staff to deliver Network communications plan.
    • Communicate
      regular updates on the status of current environmental issues and AEN
      program work to AEN members.
  3. Financial/Fund
    Development

    • Prepare
      a proposed annual budget for Board approval, and administer the funds of
      the Network accordingly.
    • Aid
      the Board in identifying and securing sources of funding in support of
      AEN programs and operation.
    • Meet
      potential donors, grantees, contract providers, prepare applications for
      funding and take any other action necessary to strengthen and expand AEN
      funding sources.
    • Ensure
      tracking and completion of funding requirements and obligations.
  4. Human
    Resources

    • Coordinate
      membership (processing new applications, renewal reminders, etc.).
    • Organize
      meetings (assist with regular board meetings, meetings of the network as
      a whole, meetings of working groups, and other meetings for members such
      as training or special projects).
    • Supervise
      additional AEN staff, and ensure staff performance reviews are completed
      on an annual basis.

Qualifications
The
qualified candidate will have:
  • Training
    and/or experience in collaboration and facilitation, with an understanding
    of social change theories such as collective impact or constellation
    model;
  • Experience
    with program delivery and member services;
  • Experience
    and interest in the environmental sector in Alberta and/or Canada
  • An
    advanced degree in a relevant field;
  • Experience
    with fundraising and financial management;
  • Experience
    supervising and managing staff;
  • Experience
    with, and an understanding of not-for-profit or charitable organizations.
The
ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience
    with government relations;
  • Experience
    with conflict management and the coordination of disparate viewpoints;
  • Demonstrated
    time management and general organizational skills;
  • Organizational
    skills;
  • Experience
    working with a Board of Directors.

    ideal candidate would be proficient with common computer programs and
    online tools such as Google Drive, and online conferencing services;
  • Proficient
    with social media tools;
  • Demonstrated
    problem solving capability and proficient at trouble shooting;
  • Able
    to employ innovative, creative, outside the box thinking, while improving
    on current processes.

Reporting
& Authority
  • The
    Network Director reports directly to AEN’s volunteer Board of Directors.
    However, most work of the Network Director is self-directed.
  • The
    Network Director has the authority to expend funds to operate the
    organization as per the annual operations budget, as approved by the Board
    of Directors.
This
position would ideally be located in Edmonton, but location can be negotiated
for the right candidate.
This
is a one-year full-time (30hrs/wk) contract position with the possibility of
extension of weekly hours and contract term. The position may require
occasional travel and work on evenings and weekends.
Compensation
is competitive in the environmental non-profit sector and will be based on
skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. Further
terms of employment will be discussed with candidates during the interview
process.
