CTCHC is a non-profit, community-based health organization committed to improving the health of community members, particularly those at risk for poverty and discrimination. Our multi-disciplinary approach includes the provision of primary health/dental care, counselling, harm reduction, community development, advocacy, and innovative partnerships with other organizations.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Working out of Central Toronto Community Health Centres, the Community Garden Coordinator will assist with delivering three community garden programs. The coordinator will work weekly at Flemingdon CHC, South Riverdale CHC and Central Toronto CHC implementing garden programs involving nutrition, physical activity and mental health promotion to marginalized adults with mental health issues. The coordinator will also write up best practices involved in running the garden programs to be used as part of a manual being developed.
Accountable to: Director Urban Health and Integration
Responsibilities:
• Developing and implementing garden activities involving physical activity, nutrition and mental health promotion with adults in garden-based programming
• Supporting and working with participants in garden maintenance tasks (planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, etc.)
• Organizing special community events, field trips and workshops
• Researching gardening programs with a mental health promotion focus and documenting the types of activities done in the garden groups for the purpose of publishing a manual
• Travelling between three Community Health Centres (Flemingdon CHC, South Riverdale CHC, Central Toronto CHC) to deliver garden programming
• Providing administrative support
• Assisting in Health Promotion programs
Qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university or combination of some post-secondary education and significant experience in health promotion and/or community development
• Three to five years relevant experience in a community setting.
• Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and delivering mental health promotion and healthy living programs.
• Experience working with people who are marginalized including people who are homeless, people with substance misuse, people with mental health issues and newcomers.
• Strong environmental/urban gardening background
• Ability to attend to physical demands of gardening
• Strong written and communication skills
• Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills
• Knowledge of community resources, newcomer resources and harm reduction
Salary: $44,516-$53,633 pro rated for 5 months
Hours: 35 hours per week, start date July 11th, possibility of renewal in Spring 2012
