The New Times Publications, Rwanda’s leading daily, is looking for a vibrant
and dynamic individual to serve in the position of Features Editor.
The person will manage a team of Features writers, and report to the Managing
Editor. He/she will be responsible for the following:
• Ensuring that writers and photographers take up and deliver on their
assignments, are innovative and submit their stories/photographs within
deadlines.
• Setting the tone, pace and context for writers and ensuring that the copy
filed is clean, factual, relevant, balanced and in good taste, and that
photographs submitted are of the highest quality, current, non-intrusive and,
if need be, can be used as ‘stand-atones’ without an accompanying story.
• Ensuring that copy filed fulfils all the requirements of a good story and
meets both the standards of news feature values and of the company’s editorial
policy of accuracy, integrity, honesty, fair comment and originality.
• Debriefing feature writers when they return from assignments and providing
guidance on copy writing; if need be, re-writing copy to ensuring that it is
well-researched and devoid of libellous or morally offensive tone or language.
• Running special projects at least once every three months.
• Serving as first line of defence in receiving complaints from the public
before alerting the ME about the contested issues.
The person must meet the
following minimum requirements:
• A university degree in journalism, communication or any other related field.
Relevant work experience of at least five years.
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
• A rich understanding of the cultural context of the Rwandan society.
• Ability to respect deadlines and to work under pressure with minimum
supervision.
